Thursday Thirteen: What Avery Loves Right Now

13 things Avery loves right now:

1. Mommy & Daddy

2. Ashlyn- pronounced by Avery as "DeDe" or sometimes "GeGe" ???

3. Water- I catch her playing in the bathroom sink many times each day; bath or shower; swimming pool; puddle

4. Baby Dolls- she feeds them in her high chair, holds them, rocks them, sings to them, tries to put diapers on them, cleans them with wipes, pushes them in the stroller, covers them with a blanket, puts their pacifiers in (and enjoys an occasional suck on it herself)

5. Real babies-she points them out every time she sees one in a store, on TV, in a book

6. Her loveys and blankets- especially her monkey lovey names "Ew, Ew" (related to Abbie's monkey also named "Ew-Ew"; as in the sound a monkey makes- I guess that's how to spell it)

7. Shoes- hers, Mommy's, Daddy's and especially Ashlyn's, anyone's shoes

8. Playing with Ashlyn's toys, especially the ones Ashlyn doesn't want her to play with

9. Books-she loves to be read to and she enjoys sitting by herself and looking at the pictures also

10. Snuggling with Mommy- my cuddle bug who loves to put her head on my shoulder and just lay there while I rock her or talk to her

11. Baby Einstein Movies

12. Gummy vitamins-she reminds me every day to give her one (sometimes she attempts for more than one)

13. Music- and dancing to it

(14. Meddling in places she shouldn't be- drawers, cabinets, purses, ...) I had to add an extra; 13 wasn't enough

Waterparks and BBQ's

I'm a bit behind with my blog entries because I've been trying to complete my continuing education courses in order to renew my speech-language pathology license. I have to have 10 hours each year and, being the procrastinator I am, have waited til the last month and actually last weeks and days to complete it. I work best under the pressures of a deadline obviously. Anyway, I finally completed the last course today. No worries! The girls were a bit bored today but it is good for them to use their imagination and play by themselves some.

We had a fun weekend. I took the girls to the new rec center on Friday. They have a really nice outdoor and indoor swimming area. There are several huge water slides that, unfortunately, Ashlyn is not yet tall enough to ride. Being the dare devil she is, she desperately wants to wrangle these slides. I'm very glad she is a go-getter and has little fear, however, my ears can only listen to so much of her ranting about not being able to go on these slides. She even plots and plans how she is going to override the system... "Mom, how about you go with me on the slide." My response: "The lifeguard did not give us that option, but even if she did, what will we do with Avery?" By the looks on her face, she must have thought that was none of her concern." Then later she noticed the lifeguard was not standing at the bottom of the several flights of stairs that lead to the top of the slides... "Mom, let's go! The lifeguard isn't standing by the slides!" Now, I thought you had to reach teenage years before feeling it is ok to completely disregard the rules! I was afraid to break the rules at that age... well, I still am to be quite honest. But not my 4 year old daughter. Oh, help us! Anyway, Ashlyn did not notice the lifeguard standing at the very top of the slide who would have sent us climbing back down the 100's of stairs. Despite not getting to experience the water slides, we were able to enjoy the several large connecting pools, a lazy river and a splash ground (water playground). We took a picnic lunch, played in the water, and treated ourselves to a fudge icecream bar. I didn't have my camera with me, but here are a couple of pictures to give you an idea of what the rec center looks like.

Surprisingly, we didn't have anything we HAD to do on Saturday. So, we took advantage of that and hung out at home most of the day. Usually we have a full day of birthday parties and other activities to attend so an occasional lazy Saturday is a nice break.

On Sunday evening we had a group of friends over for a BBQ. Ashlyn planned all weekend for this and we even went to Hobby Lobby to pick up a couple of crafts for the kiddos to make. The kids kept themselves busy in the bounce house, hanging out in front of the misting fan, and the greatest fun was playing dress up with Ashlyn's 2 trunks full of outfits, shoes, and accessories. Some how they managed to sneak in to my bedroom and complete their 'looks' with some of my lipstick (applied clown-like). We were able to get the kids to stand still long enough for a photo op. I'll post it as soon as it is emailed to me. Surprisingly, I didn't take any pics. I usually have my camera ready at all times, but since I was playing "hostess with the mostess" I wasn't able to play photographer this time. We all had a great time hanging out and enjoying great food, great wine, and great friends! I don't know why we don't do this more often!

I took the girls to another waterpark last week while we were staying at my parents' house because our air conditioner was being replaced. Never fails, if an A/C is going to go out, it will pick the hottest day of the year yet and it will make sure it happens on a Friday evening so you have to spend the entire weekend waiting for the unit to be replaced. Lucky for us, we had somewhere else to stay. Below are the pictures from that water park. Ashlyn, of course, was full force into the water as soon as we got there and immediately made friends with the kids around her. Avery decided to observe and stake out the place at first, but was soon in the water right along with her sister and the other kiddos.

Wink, Wink

Avery has learned to wink, in a toddler kind-of a way... that is, blink with both eyes. She recognizes when someone is winking at her and gives her best attempt at winking back. Then it actually becomes a game taking turns winking at each other. Ashlyn learned this same way when she was about the same age as Avery and actually still winks with both eyes. It is a cute exchange she does with her dad often while at the dinner table or across the room; just one way Chris shows her his love and makes her feel special.

Another subtle way Chris shows his girls, and me, affection is by putting his finger gently in our ear and giving a little tickle. This is a little trick taught to him by his grandad. He observed his grandad doing this to his grandmom many times when he was growing up! It always makes the girls giggle and squirm.

Avery also started calling me "mommy" yesterday, rather than "mama"! Oh boy is she growing up! I officially no longer have a baby; she's now a little girl. She wants to do all the big girl things her sister does. I can't believe she will be 2 next month. She amazes us everyday with all that she is learning, how she is becoming a chatterbox, and how she seems to be growing like a weed. She also amazes us with her firecracker attitude! She is fairly reserved until she doesn't get her way. Then, you better stand back because she will let you know she is unhappy... well mad... well down-right pissed! She demonstrates this will a certain look on her face, the high-pitched squeal, and the flailing of her arms. Even then, she is so darn cute!

Funny Friday- "It's mine!"

Avery is recently concerned with possession or ownership. She is constantly labeling things she sees by who it belongs to. If she sees her daddy's computer or favorite coffee mug, for example, she points to it and says, "Dada's". If she sees a pair of my shoes or my hairbrush she says, "Mama's". When she sees Ashlyn's purse or game she says, "DeDe". (Her attempt at saying Ashlyn sounds like DeDe. This sounds nothing like 'Ashlyn' but she consistently uses it. Maybe she is trying to say 'sister' since I sometimes refer to Ashlyn as sister). However, Avery is most concerned with things that belong to her. EVERYTHING is... "It's mine!" Her shoes, her dolls, her blankets, her favorite bib, her life jacket, books, toys, her toothbrush, you name it. Even things that clearly aren't hers, but maybe she wishes is hers, she labels as hers. Usually she states this will a very matter-of-fact tone in her voice, "It's Mine!" but at times there is some question in her voice, "It's mine?" Reminds me of the saying- "What's mine is mine and what's yours is Mine!" Yes baby, it's yours! :-)

Funny Friday- Impromptu Parties by Ashlyn

Ashlyn is very social and also loves parties; hence... Impromptu Parties by Ashlyn, as I like to call it! She is frequently planning these elaborate parties that she creates in her head and has every intention to make a reality. Each party has a theme and all the details of the party are related to the theme. She creates her guest list, makes hand made invitations, plans the menu, decides on the party favors and decorations and sometimes even decorates her room. She gets all dressed up, puts on her jewelry and fixes her hair.

The only "minor" problem in the planning is that these parties are ALWAYS impromptu, as in, plans them the day of. Since she is very spontaneous, I guess she believes everyone else can be, too. Ashlyn will begin planning her party in the late afternoon and has every expectation that we can complete her to-do list (grocery shopping, bake a cake, buy party favors, decorate) and that everyone she has "invited" will show up that same evening. I use the term "invited" loosely since she never really invites anyone (ie: doesn't call, email, mails the invitation to, or contact in any way).

Ashlyn creatively comes up with various themes. Some past themes have been: Pajama Party, Movie and Popcorn Party, and Pharaoh Party (idea was sparked by a book on Pharoahs she borrowed from the library). The party she planned last night was a Camping Party. Luckily, Ashlyn is usually satisfied with the actual guests consisting of Chris, Avery, me and, of course, Ashlyn. Her initial plan was to have a camp fire, roast marshmallows, tell scary stories and camp out in sleeping bags. We compromised by putting up her tee pee/tent in the living room, eating marshmallows and drinking lemonade, and using her lantern rather than a camp fire all while inside with the comfort of the air conditioning! We told scary stories about Big Foot. We even had a real-live Big Foot come into our camp... Liberty, our dog. Liberty played along as we tried to keep her out of our tent, popping her head in and out of the entrance to the tent with a playful growl. Liberty even ran crazily around the tent several times and startled us by coming into the tent through the back cut-out window. Ashlyn and Avery loved every minute of it and the party couldn't have been any better, even if we would have spent weeks planning every detail of the Camping Party!

Super-Sized Sunday: VBS

The girls and I just finished a week of vacation bible school. The theme was 'Beach Party- Surfin' through the Scriptures.' We had a lot of fun, but what a whirlwind! Although Ashlyn has participated in the "mini-program" during VBS (which is a scaled down version of the week's activities for the smaller kids) this was her first experience of VBS in full force now that she is a big 4 year old. She loved every minute of it which is typical for any activity in which she participates.

I volunteered to help out all week and was placed as a 'guide' for the 4 year olds, although I was not placed in Ashlyn's group. Avery was not yet old enough to participate in the mini-program activities so she was in the church nursery everyday. Since Avery has a limited vocabulary right now she was unable to let us know if she was enjoying her time in the nursery. However, she dropped a huge hint when we drove up in the church parking lot after the second day; she took a quick look out the window and realized where we were, and then let out a loud, ear piercing, "NOOOO!" She always does very well when we drop her off on Sunday mornings while we go to church service and Sunday school. I guess spending 3 1/2 hours in the nursery day after day this week just pushed her over the edge.

Ashlyn and I, on the other hand, looked forward to everyday. Ashlyn asked several times, "How many days do we have left of VBS?" As the count down of days dwindled, she would say, "I don't want it to be over!" in her sad little voice. Ashlyn said her favorite part of the week was drama- watching plays about stories in the bible. I was surprised she didn't say the crafts. My favorite was the music class. We learned some fun songs which even had dance moves to go along with the words. At the end of the week, the 4 and 5 year olds (Ashlyn included) performed these songs in the final assembly for all the parents and older VBS kids.

I will admit that being responsible for 13 four year olds (with the help of 1 other adult) was quite challenging! I was ready to fall on my face after I got home on that first day and I'm still recovering from the week. I was not prepared for the amount of energy and constant attention required to keep up with these fast-paced, talkative, all over the place kiddos! We did have the aide of a rope (no, not to tie them up) for the kids to hold on to as we changed classrooms and buildings to get to the next activity. What a difference a simple rope can make when trying to keep up with these small kids in a crowd. I definitely have a new appreciation for the preschool teachers that do this for an entire school year. I barely made it through one week!

Funny Friday

While the girls were playing outside in the backyard Tuesday evening, Ashlyn yelled out while bent over staring at the ground, "Mom, there's a crap of ants over here!" I assume she meant to say a "crap load" of ants. Now, I'm almost positive we have her dad to thank for this wise teaching of words. So this is just a reminder for all of us whom, on occasion, might let an inappropriate word or two slip out... little ears are ALWAYS listening. Even though they may not react to your 'slip' at that moment, they will repeat your words at some inopportune time (almost) word for word.
While still outside, Avery decide she would give Ashlyn a strong whack across the back. I don't even remember what caused this confrontation between them, but when these exchanges occur Ashlyn has often (but not always) done something to warrant Avery standing up for herself. Since she does not have the vocabulary yet to tell Ashlyn how she feels, she simply shows her. Trying to teach Avery that it is not appropriate to hit, I put her inside the house for a "time-out" and I returned to the backyard with Ashlyn. Avery loves to be outside so I thought I was really choosing a good way to discipline. Instead, I was the one who learned a lesson that day. While Avery was attempting to turn the door knob to get back outside, she somehow managed to hit the button on the push-lock and locked the patio door. Avery has not yet learned how to grip the knob tight enough to unlock the door. So, Avery was inside the house and Ashlyn and I were locked out in the backyard. Since both gates to our fence are pad locked from the outside, the only solution to getting back into the house was for me to scale our 7 foot wood fence and enter the house through the garage. It's funny how kids can teach grown-ups a lesson or two, also.

I have a new nickname for Avery...Streaker. My usual nickname for her is stinker or stinkeroo because she can have quite an attitude and is not affraid to let you know when she is unhappy about something. But streaker has recently come about because she is constantly taking her clothes off. Any time she sees one of us changing clothes or if she even hears the word shower or bath she immediately starts stripping, diaper and all. I recently found her butt naked when I went to get her out of her crib after her nap. Chris calls her a free spirit. Her true nickname that I have for her, however, which fits her best is angel. She really resembles an angel with her blonde hair, light skin and (usually) sweet demeanor
.

Happy Birthday Great Grandmom!

Happy birthday to Great Grandmom (Chris' grandmom)! She came to visit us from Alabama in mid-June. We all had a great time and Ashlyn and Avery kept her very busy and entertained. We went to cousin Jamie's graduation party, shopping (thanks Grandma for the new sandals), out to dinner, and to Planet Pizza for fun and games. Ashlyn loved the kiddie roller coaster and Conquistador ship. Avery loved the airplanes. I hope they didn't wear you out too much! Here are some pictures taken while she was visiting.

Super-Sized Sunday: Our week in review-New Braunfels

We spent the past 9 days in New Braunfels visiting Grammy and Poppy. We drove down last Thursday, July 3rd. The drive was quite "interesting," to put it nicely, with Ashlyn asking 30 minutes into the 4 hour drive, "How much longer?" and Avery having played with every toy in the 2 bags full of toys I packed before we were half way there. We stopped at Baylor in Waco, my alma mater, to see the real live bears. The loooong drive for the girls was well worth it though; we had a great week!

We stopped in Round Rock to see Mag and Ross' new home. Abbie had fun showing us her cute tea cup bedroom and cool playroom. Then we went to her 1st ballet class to watch the budding ballerina. Afterwards we traveled on to New Braunfels. Ashlyn and Avery immediately wore Poppy out by taking turn after turn being pushed in the swing hanging from on
e of the many huge trees in the yard. We had dinner that evening at the local, hole-in-the-wall, but reliable Mexican restaurant. We frequent this restaurant while visiting because there usually isn't a wait and it is very casual (most important) and secondly the food is good. Anyone with kids knows these things are important when you have tired, hungry kids who like to be loud and often make messes (ie: Ashlyn spilled her entire cup of milk all over the table, Grammy and floor while we were there). They also have quite an interesting and extensive menu (Chris ordered a steak which was quite tasty and tender; also on the menu is a whole fish-scales and tail included, which no one has been brave enough to order yet).

On July 4th the girls took advantage of Grammy and Poppy's big yard and all the outdoor toys and fun. The girls once again wanted to swing and swing and swing and somehow convinced Grammy and Poppy to take turns pushing each of them. We went to the feed store to buy food for the "wild" rabbits and birds (although one rabbit came right up to Ashlyn when she shook the bowl of food). Then we went and had barbecue at Rudy's-delicious! You can't celebrate July 4th without BBQ! When we got home to Grammy and Poppy's, Poppy filled up with water the big kiddie pool with slide and the girls (Ashlyn, Avery & Abbie) played in the pool while mom (Grammy), Mag and I snuck off to do a little shopping. Chris and Poppy graciously stayed behind to entertain the kiddos. This was a 'no brainer' decision for Poppy since he would rather have a root canal done than go shopping (I'm not making this up-he has actually told me this) but Chris took a little more convincing as he is more of a shopper than I am. Later we watched fire works. We had the best seats... we just walked out the front door of the house, a little ways down the street and plopped down in our lawn chairs which were practically in the middle of the street and had a perfect view. Ashlyn loved the fire works; Avery on the other hand was a bit torn... the loud noise caused her to want to bury her head in my shoulder but she would peep up and look over her shoulder with one eye to see the beautiful colors and sights.

On Saturday we planned to spend the afternoon at the lake on the boat. However it rained early in the afternoon. We were able to still drive out to the lake and enjoy dinner on the outside patio of the restaurant on the lake. There was live music which the girls enjoyed dancing to and entertained the other dining guests. The band even played songs for the girls, such as Old MacDonald Had a Farm, which they sang along to.
Sunday was a fun-filled day. We started off tubing the Guadalupe River in the late morning. Once again the rain interrupted our plans. The rain only lasted a short while but left the sky overcast. We had fun tubing but the one word I'd use to describe the experience would be BRRRR! Boy were we freezing! The water stays cool coming from the Comal River so without the hot sun our bodies took a shock as we entered the river and sat down into our tubes. There were a few rapids that were exciting, especially to Ashlyn (she kept calling them rafts), that got our adrenaline pumping as we tried to maneuver the rocks and obstacles. Ashlyn loved every second of it and was yelling out "Whoo-hoo, lets do it again." While going over one rapid, Chris somehow was "captured" by a giant rock that he had to work to free himself from. I'll admit it was a bit humorous to us, maybe not so much to him. We took lunch with us in a cooler down the river but were too cold to get out and picnic along the 2 hour ride. I was afraid if I got out of the water I couldn't convince myself to crazily get back in the frigid temperatures! Avery rode in a tube with me and Ashlyn had her own tube. We all tied our tubes to one another to stay together. I was able to keep Avery mostly out of the water while on my lap. Surprisingly she fell asleep shortly after we started- I think she decided she would go to sleep to put herself out of the misery of the cold. Later that afternoon we went to Lily's 2nd birthday party (my parents' neighbors who recently moved to a home directly on the river). The kids had fun playing games, eating (the food was delicious: how about that steak Chris, or was that pork? ha, ha!) and riding on a platform boat. Lily's dad let the kids take turns "driving" the boat. Avery had a blast driving and the hum of the boat must have been quite relaxing to her since she feel asleep while at the wheel. Good thing the co-captain was paying attention! Ashlyn thought she was grand while at the wheel and especially took pleasure in tooting the horn on the boat. I think what brought her the most enjoyment was irritating Preston, Lily's 5 yr old brother, each time she tooted it. The day was all fun and games but we had a breath-stopping scare. There was a 2 level deck with stairs leading to the top where everyone was hanging out and the food was being served. While standing at the top of the steep, wooded stairs Ashlyn was bumped (by accident or purpose we aren't sure) by Preston and she took a tumble down the entire length of the stairs. Chris and I both saw the whole thing happen from behind, and what a gut-wrenching feeling to watch your little girl in a dangerous situation and to be able to do nothing but watch from a distance. God was watching over Ashlyn at that moment because miraculously she walked away with nothing but a black and blue bruise on her left hip.
For some reason I can't quite remember the details of what we did on Monday. It must be due to the lack of sleep I got while there. We stayed up late each night plus Avery refused to sleep in her pack 'n play. Which means she slept with me! She was a restless sleeper moving all over the bed. I'm a light sleeper which means I woke up every time she turned over, rolled over up next to me or rolled to the VERY edge of the bed... well, I use the term "bed" loosely- not bed, but air mattress. The mattress was actually fairly comfortable, however I am use to a totally comfortable, best ever bed at home. What made Avery's restlessness so disturbing was the noise the plastic mattress made as it moved against the hardwood floors. That's what caused my sleeplessness which leads to my forgetfulness of the details of Monday. Chris also left to go back home on Monday which meant 'double the trouble' (I say that jokingly, but with some truthfulness) for me with the girls for the rest of the week. ...Oh, how could I forget? Monday evening, after it cooled off, we went out on Poppy's boat. Ashlyn and Abbie fished, but didn't catch anything. Their version of fishing is... having one hand on the fishing rod while eating chips with the other and giving their bobber an occasional glance. Poppy let them practice their driving skills they learned earlier in the week. Avery made sure she got a turn in the captain's chair and was not going to let us forget her!

On Tuesday Stephanie arrived with Payton and Hudson, so now all the grand kids were together. Mag and Abbie had been staying at Grammy and Poppy's since July 4th as well. We drove to Austin Tuesday evening (after the rain stopped, AGAIN!). We went to dinner- ALL the kids (a bit chaotic but Steph came to the rescue with her bag of candy which did a great job; some times you just do what you have to do...). Then we went and saw the bats come out from under the bridge at dusk. As we arrived we could not yet see any bats, however we could hear what seemed to be millions of them and even more noticeable was the smell- or should I say- odor. Ashlyn would not sit on the damp grass (from the rain earlier) because she thought the grass was wet from bat pee. It was hilarious! It was quite amazing to see the black swarm of endless bats leave there habitat under the bridge to go feed.
On Wednesday we took the kiddos to Schlitterbahn water park. It was a hit for our dare devil, Ashlyn. She would have ridden any ride there, I think. We stayed in the kiddie area which also had some nearby larger slides. Ashlyn spotted them immediately and asked repeatedly to ride them. She and I, along with Abbie and Mag, rode a slide called something like Blastoff which dumped us swiftly into the lazy river, pulling us under the water forcefully enough to cause my sunglasses to fly off my face and my sun visor to vanish from my head. As this was happening I was a bit panicked about being able to get myself as well as Ashlyn to the surface of the water quickly while in this fast rushing water. But as soon as we came up and into the calmer water Ashlyn was ready to go again. Avery loved the kiddie area where the water was just up to her knees. She liked sliding down the small water slides and experimenting with floating in her life jacket. As she discovered she could float, she would squat down in the water, bring her knees to her chest and briefly float. On most attempts she was able to get her feet back down to the ground before tobbling over. But, when not quick enough getting her feet down the life jacket would cause her to float face down in the water. She found this rather amusing... I on the other hand did not as I could not take my eye off of her since I had to grab her up each time this happened. Grammy rented a cabana for us to have a nice place to sit in the shade to eat lunch and relax. The funnest part was the lazy river and the giant alligator rafts floating in it. Grammy was finally able to wrestle one away from all the teenagers so that the girls could have a ride.
Thursday was my birthday. Grammy treated me to a pampering session of a new hair cut and high-lites. I went for a few hours of pampering while Grammy, Mag and Steph held down the fort. Later that evening we went to Greune to the Gristmill for dinner. We ate out on the patio while enjoying live country music. Afterwards, the kids enjoyed running around in the open grass while we adults continued to enjoy the music.
On Friday we packed up and headed home. Grammy and Poppy came too. We stopped in Austin at a cool toy store where they treated all the grand kids to a toy. What a fun way to end our week long vacation. Thanks Grammy and Poppy for a fun-filled week! I imagine you are still recovering from it all! I guess I got a bit long-winded capturing the events of our week. Oh well, I love remembering the details.

Happy Birthday to Chris, Tom and Me!

Happy birthday to Chris (June 17), my uncle Tom (July 15) and me (July 10)! My mom planned a little get together to celebrate all 3 of our birthdays! Thanks mom! We all took turns trying to blow out the trick candles that re-light each time we blew them out. You might notice the "?" as one of the candles... we'll just leave it at that rather than discuss how old each of us turned!!! Besides, it's all about how you act and feel rather than your actual age. Unfortunately, Chris was not there at cake cutting time. He is a commissioner for our city's cultural arts committee and was at a meeting for part of the day.
